Electricity Bill Checklist

Our Electricity Checklist is divided into 5 categories. Use My Account to help pinpoint changes in your electricity use. When logged in, click the 'Smart Meter' tab, and view your usage by hour or day!

  1. Household Changes: Even small changes like more people being at home, a new bathroom with heated floors or extra lighting can lead to higher electricity use without realizing it.
  2. Heating and Cooling: Can account for a significant % of your utility bills. A small adjustment to your thermostat can make a big difference!

Additionally, check out Save on Energy for programs to help make your home more energy efficient.

  3. Appliance & Equipment Use: Use My Account to help pinpoint changes in usage when you add new appliances.
  4. Billing & Rate Plan: Log in to My Account to see what your bill would look like with different rate plans. Select the 'Smart Meter' tab, and click on 'Price Comparison.' Learn more about rate plans.
  5. When and how you use electricity: Shifts in habits can lead to shifts in your electricity usage, especially when on Time-of-Use (TOU) billing. Click here for electricity conservation tips.

Household Changes

More people in the home (guests, kids home from school, new baby)?
Staying home more often? (e.g. working from home, school breaks)
Recent renovations or additions?
New large appliance? (e.g. freezer, fridge, hot tub, pool pump)

Heating & Cooling

Is your home heated with electricity (e.g. baseboard, electric furnace)?
Have you recently installed a Heat Pump?
Are you using a space heater in any rooms?
Do you turn the heat down or AC up when you’re away?
What is your thermostat set to during the day? At night? A 1 degree difference over 8 hours could equal a 1% bill difference!
Have filters in your furnace or AC unit been changed recently?
Dirty or clogged filters force your HVAC system to work harder to push air through, which increases energy use.
Do you feel drafts or cold/hot spots in your home?

Appliance & Equipment Use

Pool pump or pool heater
Hot tub
Garage heater
Dehumidifier or humidifier
Using high-performance computers more often (for example, gaming)?
Secondary fridge or freezer
Aquarium or terrarium equipment
Electric vehicle (EV) charging at home
Checked for faulty or inefficient equipment / appliances?
A pump that runs constantly, a faulty thermostat, or a refrigerator with a worn door seal can all use more energy than they should & can add up over time.

Billing & Rate Plan

Do you understand your rate plan (Time-of-Use vs Tiered vs ULO)?
Have you reviewed your usage breakdown in My Account?
Is the length of the billing cycle the same as the previous bill??
You can find this under 'Billing Days' located at the top of your bill.
Have you compared your current bill to the same month last year?

When and How You Use Electricity

Do you do laundry, cook, or run the dishwasher during peak hours?
Do you leave lights, TVs, or devices on in empty rooms?
Are ceiling fans or exhaust fans left on when no one’s using them?
Are you using timers or smart plugs to manage usage?
