Top 5 Tips to Save Energy in the Summer Heat

Date

Protect your energy bill and stay comfortable all season long.

When the temperature rises, so can your electricity use (especially if your air conditioner is running full tilt). Here are five simple, practical ways to stay cool and save energy this summer:

1. Use a Programmable Thermostat

Raise your thermostat when you’re not home to reduce energy use.
It’s estimated for every 1°C increase over an 8-hour period, you can save about 1% on your cooling costs. A few degrees higher while you're out for the day can make a difference on your bill. PS: Turning the thermostat way down doesn’t cool your home faster, it just uses more energy.

2. Block Out the Sun

Close blinds or curtains during peak sun hours. Sunlight can quickly heat your home, making your cooling system work harder. Light-filtering or blackout curtains can make a big difference.

3. Delay Heat-Producing Activities

Try to use heat-generating appliances like ovens, stoves, dryers, and dishwashers in the early morning or evening. You could also consider air-drying your laundry or cooking outdoors when possible.

4. Use Fans Wisely

Fans cool people, not rooms. Use ceiling or portable fans when you're in the room to help circulate cool air, making you feel cooler. You can raise your thermostat a few degrees without sacrificing comfort, just remember to turn fans off when you leave as it is still using electricity!

5. Seal Leaks and Insulate

Prevent warm air from entering and cool air from escaping by sealing small gaps around windows, doors, and attic hatches. Insulating your attic or improving ductwork can also provide long-term energy savings.
